The Old Town is today the second tourist destination of Panama City. And just seconds before the Panama Canal. In fact, nine out of ten websites that sell the country tourists use photos, talk or ”sell” Old Town. And no wonder: it is a colonial gem with a spectacular seascape, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
But something beats the Casco Viejo Panama Canal: today tourism revenues far outweigh the revenue caballeros. And while people visit the canal first, spend their tourist dollars in dozens of restaurants, art galleries and theaters of the Old Town. It is simply a living city, and as such it’s potential as a multiplier.
Today, this beautiful old town is threatened by the claim of the Panamanian government to build a highway around it. UNESCO and civil society organization shave raised warning voices against this project would destroy the historical authenticity of the site.
The images you see in this blog were taken in less than ten minutes on Sunday afternoon. Seeing how both local and foreign fully enjoy the site, its peace, marine, tropical breezes and romance.
Costa Rica does not do to have an Old Town! To have something like The Vaults!
